“You know what the name Momofuku means?
It means “lucky 🍑.

“During one of our trips, I bought a hundred bucks’ worth of 🍑es and nectarines from one stall.”

Olivia explains time travel

“Madeleine’s head looked shrunken, her body dwarfed by the creamy 🍑 comforter she was tucked into, like a fragile figurine encased in bubble wrap.”

Who’s collection and where are they from?
Who painstakingly brought this back and from where?

“Christine saw my father at a clinic in La Crosse, a small city along Wisconsin’s western border with Minnesota, a place known to most, now, for having lent an archaic Old French version of its name to America’s most popular brand of flavored sparkling water, La Croix, a drink concocted there in the early ’80s and eventually sold to a publicly traded holding company based, for the tax purposes of its owner, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.”

“Just remember this, Mr. Potter: that this rabble you’re talking about—they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath?

Alexis’s October 19. The last in person bookclub of 2020.
The last in person meeting of 2020.
The first thing to come out of my box was a ten-pound bag of rice. It looked like we would be eating a lot of that. Plus beans, canned 🍑es and peanut butter.
You want me to believe you got nothing but peanut butter and 🍑es left? You think I am buying that?

“She had worn her most expensive 🍑 -colored georgette silk dress with matching heels and a real pearl necklace, borrowed from mama-san.”

“He hit her again and again, banging her head against the side lamp of the car until she stopped making any noise. Blood covered her face and the front of her 🍑 -colored dress.”

White for Daisy

White for women’s suffrage, 100 years

“She’s gorgeous—even as a child. She has these stunning big blue eyes—dark, cobalt blue.”
“Look, Daisy was barefoot when it was cold, wearing jackets when it was hot, sweating no matter the temperature. She never thought before she spoke. She seemed sort of manic and half-delusional sometimes.”

“Look after them moonflowers behind the church for my Hettie.” Then he walked into the water. Walked right into the harbor holding that bottle of King Kong. I said, “Wait a minute, Sport, that water’s cold.” But he went on ahead.”

“A young mother stepped forward and said, “You showed me how to can 🍑 es,” and kissed him.”
“She smiled and gave him the look. He’d forgotten Hettie’s “look”: her smile of understanding and acceptance that said, “All intangibles are forgiven, I accept them and more—your faults, your dips and turns, everything, because our love is a hammer forged at the anvil of God and not even your most foolish, irrational act can break it.” That look. Sportcoat found it unsettling.”
